65th Birthday Party
ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL, CLASS OF 1964
HAPPY 65TH BIRTHDAY PARTY
On Saturday, August 6, 2011, our class celebrated the year of Medicare when many of us made 65 years of age. At the Honolulu Country Club about 100 classmates, partners, and friends came together to enjoy a bountiful buffet dinner and to connect and re-connect with school buddies. With recorded oldies music in the background, provided by Leslie Tanaka, and the golf course venue of the country club, the ambience was just perfect for this event.
Prior to the dinner, with a no host bar, many classmates came early to circulate and talk story with those they perhaps had not seen since high school days. With large round tables that seated ten, the camaraderie continued as we enjoyed an onolicious buffet of local favorites. Planners ensured there was a varied and generous assortment of dishes to suit even the more evident epicure.
Picture taking was definitely a part of the event with a group picture of classmates who were 65 years of age and a second group who were just a little younger. A professional photographer was not needed as many had their cameras and cell phones ready to take those special shots. (Pictures can be viewed on the web site).
A memorable time occurred when the lights were dimmed and we all sang Happy Birthday to each other with cupcakes lighted with a single candle. The cupcakes were artfully decorated with, of course, RHS colors of red and gold.
This gathering allowed us to discuss the upcoming 50th reunion in 2014, which will come upon us too quickly. Our class president, Laurie Yap Wong is chairing this momentous event and was able to poll class members as to what activities would be important to include, i.e. luau, sightseeing, tour of the school, etc.
The end of the 65th birthday party was poignantly concluded with the singing of our Alma Mater, the singing of “Hawaii Aloha” with held hands in a circle, and a pule. The Alma Mater was led by Charlie Spencer; “Hawaii Aloha” was led by Orson Enos, Winona Hussey Fuller, Bernadette Shea Lewis, Avis Orson Makalii, June Kaolohi Nasau, and Susan Kalekini Hamada. Orson spontaneously shared a pule, that spiritually connected all of us with each other.
The 65th birthday party was a gift to the class of the 1964, which provided a memory we will forever carry in our hearts.
On behalf of the committee members, a grateful thank you was given to classmates for their participation in the successful celebration of the year of Medicare.
